Christmas Comes Early For Bargain Hunters
More bad news for the highstreet today as the UK’s latest retail figures show a 0.1% dip in sales.
Although the drop isn’t as bad as expected, it has been enough to prompt several retailers including The Arcadia Group, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer to throw impromptu sales in an attempt to coerce shoppers through their doors.
The move is an unusual one, even in difficult times most retailers try to hold their nerve until boxing day, but it seems that desperate times call for desperate measures. The ploy seems to assume that Christmas shoppers will take advantage of the bargains on offer and buy more items that they usually would, however, there is a fear that they will only buy the same amount of items as before, but at a lower cost. Obviously, this would have an impact on the retailer’s bottom line.
More and more is being staked on a strong Christmas period. The next set of retail figures will let us know if the gamble has paid off.
